Between the inspired work coming out of Telltale Games, the return of old classics thanks to digital distribution, and the seemingly endless parade of Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie mysteries, fans of the point-and-click adventure seem to have limitless options at their disposal. It's in this climate that LucasArts decided to bring their nearly 20 year-old pirate-themed masterpiece The Secret of Monkey Island back from the depths.

I generally don’t like to go to sequels of blockbuster movies because my expectations are so high based on the success of the original that I’m almost always disappointed. Well, one of the challenges of writing reviews is that sometimes I’m tasked with judging the pros and cons of an iPhone game that is based on a successful PC/Mac game like Virtual Villagers: The Lost Children. I realize there are really two different audiences to consider: the “fans” and the “newbies.”

Ever suffered from a severe bout of deja vu? Rare are the days that pass by without me thinking I've been somewhere in the past or spoken to someone that, in reality, I've never actually met before. It's an alarming feeling that can bug you for the rest of the day, but it's one many iPhone gamers suffer from on a regular basis - most notably when they're sitting down to tackle yet another match-three puzzler.

Patriotism and blowing stuff up seem to go hand-in-hand a little too naturally. While the real deal can be terrifying and destructive, colorful man-made explosions designed to dazzle in the night skies are an alluring annual treat for those seeking celebration and merriment. These crowd-pleasing displays bring smiles to the faces of young and old alike. However, in the wrong hands, even explosives designed to entertain can prove disastrous. Fireworks and air traffic do not mix. Your job in Liberty Boom is to see to it that they don't.

When I was a kid growing up in the 60’s and 70's, we didn’t have video games to keep us entertained. Instead, we played hide n’ seek or freeze tag, and card games and board games when we couldn’t go outside. My dad loved “coffee table” games that were not only attractive (they were usually constructed out of wood and polished steel) but also fun and challenging. I remember playing Labyrinth for hours, trying to navigate the little steel ball into the “goal” at the end without letting the ball fall into one of the trap holes.

I remember the first time I played air hockey at an arcade. My brother beat me pretty badly, but that just motivated me to learn the techniques required to win. After several hours, very sore knuckles, and some friendly family competition, I learned to be pretty good at controlling the puck as it slid, high speed across a cushion of air. When I found out that iPhone app Glow Hockey is really just like Air Hockey with fluorescent glowing pieces and parts, my childhood memories came back to me.
